Johor MB Launches RM12Mil Senai Airport’s Expansion

The expansion that started in March 2020 has fully completed in August 2023 which increases the ability to handle from 4 million passengers per year to 5 million passengers per year

Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has launched the Senai International Airport (Senai Airport) expansion, undertaken by Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd.

“This Additional Change Development Project involves the proposal to build an additional Phase 1 block which is a 1-Storey Departure Hall and Covered Pedestrian Walkway. Among the impacts of these improvements is an increase in passenger terminal capacity by 1 million passengers per year, reducing passenger congestion at Departure Gate No. 4 with the addition of 5 additional departure gates (gates 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9) and (ensuring that) passengers are not exposed to hot weather/rain and any danger from the movement of the aircraft,” he said in his official Facebook post.

“In addition, I was also informed that the new Departure Hall is equipped with facilities such as CCTV and Wi-Fi camera systems, shop space (3 lots), as well as the Flight Information Display System (FIDS), stairs, elevators, escalators, bathrooms (female, male, and disabled), a fire extinguishing system, a public address system, and air conditioning,” he added.

Also present were Chairman of the Johor State Transport and Infrastructure Public Works Committee, Ir. Ts. Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh; Johor State Investment, Trade, and Consumer Affairs Committee Chairman, Lee Ting Han; Chairman of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh; and Chief Executive Officer of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, Kennedy Ayu.

Chairman of Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said that the Senai International Airport’s expansion was timely as the aviation gateway for Iskandar Malaysia and the southern region, where it provides important routes and services to meet the needs of tourists and businesses.

“The Senai International Airport has contributed to the economic development of Johor, especially the local community and its environment,” he said to reporters on the day of launch.

Che Khalib said the Senai International Airport‘s expansion started in March 2020 and was fully completed in August 2023.

He said a total of RM11.9 million has been used to finance the project.

“The expansion project is able to increase the passenger handling capacity at Senai International Airport from 4 million passengers per year to 5 million passengers per year.

“With the addition of this facility, it will be able to increase the level of efficiency, safety, and efficiency of passenger handling by airline companies, in addition to enhancing the comfort and smoothness of the passengers’ experience,” he said.

Che Khalib explained that the additional Departure Halls can be upgraded in the future, in accordance with the SATSSB’s long-term plan.

“This is due to the building’s foundation being designed to handle any increase from one floor to two floors, which can accommodate an additional 2 million passengers,” he explained, adding that it was based on a projected passenger capacity target of 7 million by 2030.

Senai International Airport’s newly expanded area is 1,690 square metres, making the total area of the Departure Hall 9,806 square metres.

Senai International Airport currently has five airlines operating, with flights to 12 domestic destinations and five South-East Asian and international destinations.
