Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards (IMSHA) winner, Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club (JBHJC) celebrated the 17th Johor Bahru’s World Laughter Day at Fo Guang Shan – Hsingma Si, Taman Sutera Utama, on 4th May 2025.
The annual event celebrated every first Sunday in May saw over 400 participants, with State Assemblywoman of Skudai, Marina Ibrahim, in attendance. Over 160 of the participants were students and teachers from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kuo Kuang 2.
Marina, in her speech during the celebration, commended the Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club for organising World Laughter Day and promoting a meaningful, unifying cause, emphasising that laughter transcends differences and strengthens our shared humanity.
She also highlighted the importance of using laughter to relieve stress—especially in schools—and as a tool for personal and collective success.
Also in attendance were Dr Lee Boon Peng, Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Suraya Yusoff, Associate Professor & consultant psychiatrist, Dr Alipah Bte Baharom, Ketua Jabatan Psikiatri, Hospital Sultan Aminah. Dato’ Albert Ding, President of Lions Club Johor Jaya, Dr Vindhu Valaiuthem, Masters in Counselling, accompanied by Danny Loo, Organising Chairman, 17th JB-World Laughter Day 2025 Celebration, Koh Mui Cheng, President, Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club and Fung Lee Jean, Founder of Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club, along with members of Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club and non-governmental organisations, together with the general public.
The rainy morning did not deter the spirit of the participants from celebrating, starting off with light exercise and moving to reading World Laughter Day Peace Messages from Dr Madan Kataria, founder of worldwide Laughter Clubs, in four languages; Bahasa Malaysia by Tan Yong Han, SJKC Kuo Kuang 2 student, Mandarin by Chong Jia Xing, SJKC Kuo Kuang 2’s student, Tamil by Dr Kasthoori Thilaka A/P Krishinan from Hospital Sultanah Aminah and English by Yang Chun Ya, SJKC Kuo Kuang 2’s student.
The highlights of the message include the global Laughter Yoga community gathering to promote health, happiness, and world peace through the practice of laughter, marking over 30 years of the movement’s growth in more than 120 countries.
The message also remarked that laughter is an inner and outer transformation where laughter transforms individuals from within, helping release internal stress and improving well-being—ultimately contributing to harmony and peace in the world.
It also said that it helps build a global community through free social Laughter Clubs, where people from all walks of life unite in joy, creating a compassionate and peaceful global network rooted in love, kindness, and laughter.
The highlight of the event was the Laughter Contests at the 17th JB-World Laughter Day 2025 Celebration, crowning Laughter King to Soon Boon Keng, 82, Laughter Queen to Che Wan Norzirawati Binti Che Wan Abdul Rahman, 48, Laughter Prince, Yong Qi Jun, 7, and Laughter Princess, Lam Shyeang, 10.
The World Laughter Day celebrations in Johor Bahru aim to celebrate the spirit of World Laughter Day while also uniting communities through laughter.
The Club inspires youthful energy – engaging younger generations to embrace joy and connection and spread awareness of laughter’s benefits where the community promotes laughter as a tool for physical and mental well-being.
The Happy and Joyous Club JB hosts yoga laughter daily for everyone to join for free and actively organises events online and even offline.
