Johor Bahru City Square (JBCS), the heart of the city’s retail scene, today announced a multi-phase landmark Asset Enhancement Initiative (AEI) that will redefine its legacy and cement its status as Johor Bahru’s leading shopping and lifestyle destination.
Transformation works begin this month, with completion targeted for Q4 2027.
Strategically located just minutes from the Johor Bahru–Singapore Causeway, JBCS has long been a popular retail landmark for both Malaysians and Singaporeans. The redevelopment will feature a refreshed façade, reimagined interiors, expanded retail mix and a host of new experiences, positioning JBCS as the vibrant heart of retail, leisure, and lifestyle for years to come.
“Our transformation is not just about unveiling a striking new look — it’s about shaping a future-ready destination. JBCS has long been a beloved mall for both local shoppers and cross-border travellers. By combining refreshed spaces with a curated mix of new brands and experiences, we are investing in JBCS’ future to ensure it continues to thrive as the vibrant heart of retail, leisure, and lifestyle for generations to come,” said Tho Leong Chye, Managing Director of Allgreen Group, the company that owns JBCS.
What’s Changing:
Unfolding in five distinct phases, the mall will continue to operate as usual as new zones and features are progressively unveiled. The transformation works will encompass:
• Retail Expansion: More anchor tenants refreshed specialty stores, and immersive experiential zones.
• Culinary Destination: New food precincts blending global cuisines with local favourites.
• Family & Wellness: Amenities like the Kids Adventure Park and Health & Wellness Hub for all ages.
• Sustainability & Tech: Energy-efficient cooling, smart parking, digital connectivity, and waste management upgrades.
• Façade & Interiors: A brighter, modern architectural design with improved layouts for seamless shopping.
Beyond retail, the addition of hotel apartments above the mall (Q2 2028) will bring a new live-work-play dimension, creating an integrated lifestyle hub in Johor Bahru’s city centre.
With enhanced connectivity from the upcoming Rapid Transit System (RTS), linking Johor Bahru to Singapore in just six minutes by end-2026, JBCS is poised to welcome both domestic shoppers and a surge of cross-border visitors. This transformation will not only boost retail vibrancy and tenant growth but also foster community spaces that reinforce JBCS’ role as Southern Malaysia’s one-stop retail and lifestyle destination.
Throughout the transformation, JBCS will remain fully operational, ensuring shoppers continue to enjoy their favourite brands and experiences.
