The Johor State Assembly amended the 1895 Johor Constitution today to reduce the age of candidates for state seats from 21 to 18 years old.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ir. Haji Hasni Mohammad proposed, and Semarang assemblyman Datuk Samsolbari Jamali seconded the amendment to the age restriction in Clause 16 of the Second Part of the State Constitution. After the third reading, it was unanimously passed.
When introducing the law, Hasni stated that it was part of the state government’s continued efforts to empower young people.
