The Johor Causeway, which connects the state of Johor to Singapore, celebrated its centenary anniversary on the 28th of June, 2024, with His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Regent of Johor, at the Celebration of the Johor Causeway Opening Ceremony.

Tunku Ismail witnessed a souvenir exchange session between the Johor State Government, represented by Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and the Government of Singapore, represented by Singapore’s Foreign Minister, His Excellency Vivian Balakrishnan, as well as the symbolic release of 100 pigeons to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Johor Causeway’s opening.

The Johor Causeway is significant in history because it was the first land connection across the Tebrau Strait, having been built in 1919.

It was inaugurated during the reign of the late Sultan Sir Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar on 28th June 1924.

“Now, the Johor Causeway is one of the busiest land border routes in the world. The symbolism of this celebration is a sign of the closeness of Johor-Singapore relations, which complement each other, in addition to further strengthening diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries,” said Johor Menteri Besar, Dato’ Onn Hafiz, in his Facebook post.

In conjunction with celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Johor Causeway, Yayasan Warisan Johor took the initiative to hold an exhibition related to the history of the Johor Causeway which was held on the same day of the centenary celebration at the Muzium Tokoh Johor, Johor Bahru.

Inaugurated by Onn Hafiz, the exhibition showcases the history and important events during the construction of the causeway.

It will be moved to Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) on 1st July 2024, to be displayed to the public.
