The office of Jementah Assemblywoman, Ng Kor Sim has introduced a special initiative in conjunction with post-Aidilfitri holiday to help students from Segamat to return to their respective institutions of learning using the electric train (ETS) service.

This assistance involves an RM20 ticket subsidy per person, as an encouragement to students to choose a safer, faster and more environmentally friendly method of travel. The ETS service to Segamat, Johor from KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur that has been operating since March 2025.

This initiative is open to all Malaysian students who are from Segamat and taking the ETS from Segamat KTM Station to their respective colleges, universities or schools, for trips dated 2nd to 13th April 2025. Applications are open from 10th April to 21st April 2025.

Recipients of the assistance will be selected on a “first come, first served” basis, and are limited to the first 100 students only. To qualify, applicants must send their full name, identity card number, phone number, image of a valid student card and image of the ETS ticket to WhatsApp number 012-360 5800.

Ng said this initiative was introduced because the festive season often involves various financial commitments for students and their families.

“As a representative of the people, I am always looking for ways to help ease the burden on families, especially in terms of education. When we make things easier for students, we are actually investing in the future of the country,” said Ng.

Ng also informed that the response to this initiative has been very encouraging. Many students and parents have welcomed this effort, which she described as practical, timely and focused on the real needs of the people.

“The feedback we have received has been very positive. It gives a clear signal that this kind of small but impactful assistance should be continued. We are looking into the possibility of expanding similar initiatives in the future,” she added.

Ng hopes that when students feel comfortable using ETS, they will choose this service more often and invite their friends to visit Segamat, thus indirectly boosting the local tourism sector.

This initiative is among the targeted approaches introduced by Ng to support mobility, well-being and social development among the youth of Segamat. This effort is also in line with Malaysia’s aspirations towards a sustainable and inclusive public transport system.

Since 15th March 2025, the ETS service, which covers the Padang Besar to Gemas route, has been expanded to Johor, with Segamat as the first stop in the state.

Traveling to Segamat from Kuala Lumpur using ETS now only takes less than three hours, compared to driving which can take up to over four hours depending on traffic.
