The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA), in collaboration with the University of Reading Malaysia, hosted a forum titled “Sustainability Today for Tomorrow,” underscoring the critical role of sustainable practices for long-term corporate resilience. This event, part of MAICSA’s strategic engagement in the Southern Region, served as a platform for fostering connections with local professionals and inspiring the next generation of governance leaders.
The forum, attended by over 100 participants, including MAICSA members and University of Reading Malaysia students, highlighted the need for integrating sustainable approaches within corporate frameworks. MAICSA President, Dato’ Akbar bin Moidunny, emphasised the forum’s focus on sustainability, with insights on effective succession planning as a key element for business continuity and resilience. “Sustainability is not just a concept for tomorrow; it is an imperative for today’s corporate strategies to ensure long-term success,” he noted.
MAICSA CEO, Justin J Anthony, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Sustainability extends well beyond the traditional ESG factors. It now requires responsible resource use, corporate accountability, and a commitment to innovation, all of which contribute to lasting organisational growth. Governance professionals play a crucial role in bridging these areas to support sustainable practices that meet both organisational and societal expectations.”
Meanwhile, Azrin bin Mohd Ripin, Johor State Director of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), highlighted the fact that SSM had mobilised strategies and approaches that support the reform agenda in strengthening the governance framework, including the corporate sector ecosystem. He highlighted, “SSM has invested significantly in awareness, training and development programmes to ensure everyone is well-equipped to implement these changes. As a result, we are seeing more corporations improving their efforts to adopt best practices for corporate governance and sustainability.”
Also in attendance was Yee Chee Mun, CEO of Wezmart Group, who gave a talk on how digitising corporate governance can enhance efficiency and transparency. MAICSA’s Head of Technical and Research also delivered valuable updates on current governance practices, including the Malaysian Business Reporting System (MBRS), Directors’ Circular Resolution (DCR), and digital solutions such as e-Board and e-Office (e-BOSS). These discussions underscored the importance of leveraging digital tools to enhance governance and adapt to the evolving business environment. This impactful forum emphasised MAICSA’s commitment to equipping governance professionals and aspiring students with the knowledge to shape a sustainable future.
