Gotion High-Tech (Gotion), one of the top three global leaders in battery energy storage solutions (BESS) and power battery technology, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITRAMAS Corporation (ITRAMAS) and UEM Sunrise Berhad (UEM Sunrise) to develop a cutting-edge R&D centre that will be located within the Renewable Energy (RE) cluster of UEM Sunrise’s planned Industrial Park located in Gerbang Nusajaya, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
This is part of the one (1) gigawatt (GW) hybrid solar power plant project, a flagship catalytic project under Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) that is being undertaken by UEM Group Berhad (UEM Group) through its wholly-owned subsidiary and green industries arm, UEM Lestra Berhad (UEM Lestra).
The MoU took place today at the Malaysia-China Summit 2024, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). The signatories were Dr Yan Changqing, Chief Operations Officer of Gotion’s Asia Pacific Division, Hafizuddin Sulaiman, Officer in Charge and Chief Financial Officer of UEM Sunrise, and Lee Choo Boo, Managing Director of ITRAMAS Corporation. Also present was Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), who witnessed the signing ceremony.
Under this partnership, Gotion brings to the table advanced technological knowledge in BESS solutions while ITRAMAS will provide its expertise in local market access and commercialisation. UEM Sunrise, the township and property arm of UEM Group, will play the pivotal role of master developer, delivering top-tier infrastructure and fostering an environment primed for innovation and sustainability.
With an aim to drive innovation and develop local talent, both Gotion and ITRAMAS are taking the partnership a step further by planning to partner with local-based organisations and academic institutions. ITRAMAS will be collaborating with TusStar Malaysia, a key entity of TusHoldings, China’s largest technology incubator as well as a diversified science and technology holding group, known for its specialisation in Artificial Intelligence. ITRAMAS is also planning to partner with DRB-HICOM University of Automotive Malaysia, an institution offering industry-driven programmes to nurture global leaders in sustainable automotive solutions.
Beyond advancing renewable energy capabilities, this collaboration highlights UEM Sunrise’s commitment to accelerating its industrial play and expediting the growth of Iskandar Puteri as a hub for future-ready industries. By establishing the Industrial Park within Gerbang Nusajaya, the project is expected to create significant job opportunities, both directly and indirectly, contributing to the local economy. Furthermore, the partnership will cultivate local researchers, empowering Malaysia’s talent pool with access to cutting-edge technologies and global expertise.
According to Gotion High-Tech, “The collaboration with UEM Sunrise and ITRAMAS in the renewable energy industry and technology is a key part of the company’s global strategic layout. This partnership will leverage Gotion High-Tech’s advanced technology in BESS, combined with ITRAMAS’s market insights and UEM Sunrise’s infrastructure capabilities, to jointly promote the development of the renewable energy industry in Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region. Gotion High-Tech looks forward to strengthening connections with local enterprises and academic institutions, fostering technological exchanges, and nurturing professional talent, contributing to the global transition to green energy.”
“This partnership amplifies our industrial development strategy, boosting our industrial development values through construction for this transformative project. It embodies our ambition to push boundaries, champion sustainability, and establish Iskandar Puteri as a thriving hub for technological and economic progress. By welcoming a global leader like Gotion to Gerbang Nusajaya, we are not merely hosting a cutting-edge R&D centre, we are laying the groundwork for transformative change that will create ripples across industries and shape Malaysia’s green economy for generations to come,” said Hafizuddin Sulaiman, Officer in Charge and Chief Financial Officer of UEM Sunrise.
Meanwhile Lee Choo Boo, Managing Director of ITRAMAS Corporation, remarked, “This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the NETR catalyst project, with Gotion’s involvement demonstrating tangible progress in Malaysia’s renewable energy journey. By combining Gotion’s advanced expertise in BESS technology with our local market knowledge and UEM Sunrise’s infrastructural capabilities, this initiative strengthens the foundation for innovation and sustainability. The R&D centre will play a pivotal role in fostering local talent, driving technological breakthroughs, and creating value for the RE and EV ecosystems, further advancing Malaysia’s position as a regional leader in clean energy solutions.”
