When it comes to Chinese New Year’s meals, the huge feast for the whole family on the eve of the New Year should always be the emphasis.
The bigger the family, the more food and dishes to excite everyone, and coming from a big family with extensive cousins myself, I can feel the need to prepare that much of food in my mind.
DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru probably took this pointer in mind and prepared a huge wok of ‘Treasure Pot’ or ‘Poon Choy’, exclusively made available for the Makan Kitchen’s Prosperity Reunion Buffet Dinners. My heart felt so content on seeing a mountain of sweet water prawns, slipper lobster, sea bass, razor clams, roasted duck, roasted chicken and seasonal vegetables in a seafood broth being stacked in the wok, ready for lines of people to take.
Being served so much food like a buffet would make it hard to choose and adjusting myself to experience reunion dinner with a buffet, I found that a handful of Singapore Chilli Crab with Golden Bun (mantao) is great to have while you are chatting the night away, catching up with relatives whom you have not met for over 2 years!
For dessert, make sure you make some room for the most lauded Durian cake in the cute shape of durian itself or take a bite into traditional desserts like Ang Ku Kueh and Fried Chinese pancake that is served fresh by the chefs themselves.
