Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Centre (HIJBCC) is going east as its inspiration for their ‘Anyaman Rasa Timur’ (Weaving Taste of the East) buka puasa buffet at the spacious and tastefully decorated Dine@Eight Restaurant.

Upon entering, I was drawn towards the Middle East counter that offers freshly sliced kebabs, followed by traditional North Indian cuisines of ‘Naan and Chicken Tandoori’ and the ‘33 Herbs and Spices Roasted Whole Lamb’. Getting a quick bite of each is a must and if you’re adventurous, pick up the stuffed capsicum to go with these meaty dishes.

Want a touch of fame? Angelyn Tan, one of the Marcom Managers of HIJBCC shared about their special signature dish; the ‘Duck Egg with Spicy Coconut Gravy’, which was a dish personally taught by celebrity chef – Dato’ Fazley Yaakob to HIJBCC’s Executive Chef. To my surprise, the savoury, full-bodied gravy goes so well with the grainy rice that was stuffed in the capsicum along with the kebab, tandoori and Lamb Kabsa.

Realising it was heavy on meat; I went to get the fresh traditional vegetables like the ulam-ulaman. My go to salads are definitely pegaga or pennywort that works two ways – one to cleanse my palate and second, to ease my food intake guilt!

Saving some space in the tummy, I made it a point to try some authentic Hari Raya dishes such as Lemang Kampung, Ketupat Nasi, Kuah Kacang, Serunding Daging and Serunding Kelapa.

I was ready to end my session and wanted something refreshing. The fresh fruits servings are extensive here, just right beside the juice section to quench the fasting appetite and thirst. Also, no meal is complete if you didn’t have some traditional kuih-muih (deserts). Head over to the live-cooking station where kuih ketayap is made with coconut and Gula Melaka caramelising inside the roll of thin, green pastry.
