Embracing opportunities under renewable energy solutions, Gas Malaysia Berhad (Gas Malaysia), through its wholly owned subsidiary, Gas Malaysia Green Ventures Sdn Bhd (GMGV), achieved a significant milestone by reaffirming its commitment to the nation’s green energy agenda with the official launch of Malaysia’s first Centralised Biomethane Injection Station in Kluang, Johor.

The ceremony was officiated by Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Minister of Plantation and Commodities, together with Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, Chairman of Gas Malaysia and Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, President & Group Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia. The event also welcomed the presence of key government officials, industry leaders and stakeholders. The Centralised Biomethane Injection Station, spearheaded by GMGV is strategically positioned to receive biomethane from surrounding palm oil mills and offers a centralised solution for injecting biomethane into the natural gas grid.

The station is scheduled to be fully operational by the second half of 2025. In his opening remarks, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, Chairman of Gas Malaysia, expressed his appreciation for the government’s support in progressing the sustainability agenda, as demonstrated by their support and presence at the launching ceremony.

“We have in place a 10-year strategic plan, known as the GM32 Strategy, which is focused on reinforcing Gas Malaysia’s core business, exploring new opportunities along the gas value chain and diversifying into cleaner energy solutions. Today’s ceremony marks a significant milestone in our journey towards realising the aspirations outlined in our GM32 Strategy. Through GMGV, we remain committed in reducing carbon emissions and facilitating the transition to cleaner energy across industries. In line with these efforts, the biomethane initiative will remain a crucial component in our growth trajectory in driving sustainable energy solutions,” Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin elaborated.

Furthermore, this effort by Gas Malaysia is aligned with key national policies, including the National Energy Policy 2022–2040 (NEP) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

These frameworks underline Malaysia’s aspiration to shift towards a low-carbon economy and a more inclusive and sustainable energy ecosystem. In addition, this effort also supports the National Biomass Action Plan 2023–2030, by transforming palm oil waste into high-value renewable gas, therefore contributing to a circular economy while enhancing the value chain of the plantation sector.

This business venture is poised to deliver encouraging outcomes, including the provision of internationally certified green gas, recognised under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), which in turn helps industrial customers achieve their sustainability goals. Additionally, it is expected to create value for renewable gas producers through partnership with Gas Malaysia, by enhancing the viability and profitability of biomethane projects.

During the launching ceremony, several other significant activities were also held, including the handover of the Malaysian Book of Records certificate, officially recognising the Centralised Biomethane Injection Station as the first of its kind in Malaysia. The event also featured a signing ceremony with AmBank, marking a strategic financial collaboration to support sustainable energy projects, as well as a Memorandum of Collaboration with Evonik, aimed at exploring future joint initiatives in green technology development.

Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee also acknowledged the support received from the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities in crafting policies and incentives that accelerate the development of renewable energy in Malaysia. He further extended appreciation to the Malaysian Palm Oil Board for their contribution and to Malaysian Investment Development Authority for their engagement in facilitating the development of this innovative business model.

“Looking ahead, we remain steadfast in our commitment in cultivating partnerships and delivering sustainable growth that creates long-term value. With continued support from the government, our business partners and key stakeholders, Gas Malaysia is well-positioned to reach new heights. Together, lets continue to advance meaningful progress towards a more inclusive, low-carbon and sustainable future for all,” Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee concluded.
