“The initiative will reduce the cost of paying tolls for people who are returning to celebrate Aidilfitri in their respective hometowns, and make it easier for them to plan their journey,” the Prime Minister told at a press conference earlier.

Dato Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works, in his statement said that the provision of free tolls for 4 days for all classes of vehicles on all 33 highways is the first time the Federal Government has given to highway users.

“Previously, the longest period for free tolls was for 2 days in conjunction with the 2023 Chinese New Year holiday on all highways.”

He added that the government has provided free tolls for all classes of vehicles in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration in 2022, but only on 7 highways under the PLUS Malaysia Berhad Group and 2 highways under the ANIH Berhad Group. Other highways only offer discounts ranging from 30% to 50% for all vehicle classes.

Although no tolls are charged during the four-day period, Touch ‘N Go card users must still place the card on the device (reader) located in the toll lane in order for the toll bar to open and the user to pass through the toll plaza.

While Smartag and RFID users (except on East Coast Highway 1 and East Coast Highway 2) also still need to slow down when passing through toll lanes.

“Ministry of Works through the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM) has coordinated all highway concession companies to make thorough preparations to face the surge in traffic as the Ministry expects the majority of highway users to seize the opportunity to enjoy this free toll by rearranging travel schedules back home based on the free toll dates,” Alexander continues.

In a separate statement on his official Facebook page, he also added he was aware of the congestion issue at Karak-KL Expressway and has instructed that all road maintenance work to stop effective from 18 April to 7 May 2023 to ensure the smooth running of the highway this festive season.
