In an effort to resolve the human-elephant conflict, the Johor state government will develop a warning system to ensure resident safety.

Ling Tian Soon, chairman of the Johor State Health and Environment Committee, stated that the warning system would use satellite collars on elephants.

He stated that there are five active elephant groups, each containing 30 to 40 animals, in the districts of Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Mersing, and Labis, Segamat.

“We have received allocations from the central government to install satellite collars on elephants to obtain data on the movement of these animals.

“…with this we can share information through an early warning system so that villagers can be vigilant if there are elephants nearby,” he said at a press conference after officiating the Handover Ceremony of Medical and Non-Medical Asset Donations to three health clinics.

Ling made this statement when asked about the state’s human-elephant conflict. He stated that the attempt is one of the medium-term projects being pursued by the state administration.

According to him, food banks would also be established in forest edge areas in partnership with the plantation business as a long-term solution to the problem.

“We have identified 21 locations for food banks on the edge of the forest, to prevent elephants from entering people’s farms or gardens,” he said.

He stated that the initiative to build the food bank requires at least one acre of land, according to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks’ plan.
