Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi had visited the YHL Aquatic, Desaru Farm, a leading aquaculture company in Malaysia that operates high-tech shrimp, oyster and fish farming ponds.
According to Onn Hafiz, YHL Aquatic is the first local company to own genetic technology and develop its own prawn strains, which also operates as Malaysia’s first Nucleus Centre and Broodstock Multiplication Centre (BMC). Besides that, YHL Aquatic is said to be a pioneer of Malaysia’s largest Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system, operating Southeast Asia’s largest oyster (mollusc) hatchery and also Malaysia’s pioneer in aquatic tourism.
“YHL Aquatic accounts for about 14% of prawn production in Johor, indicating its importance in bolstering the state’s food security and economy,” said Onn Hafiz.
“They also intend to extend their operations at Bio Desaru, increasing production capacity, strengthening the supply of high-quality seafood, and creating additional job opportunities in Johor.”
“I am certain that by expanding this project and utilising current technology, YHL Aquatic will not only improve Johor’s position as Malaysia’s most sophisticated aquaculture hub but will also establish Johor as a regional leader in the bioeconomy industry.”
“Hopefully, all of these activities will boost the expansion of this high-tech aquaculture sector as part of the strategy to strengthen the state’s economy and national food security and propel Johor to become a world-class bioeconomy hub”, he added.
