Sunway Citrine Hub Launches World Environment Day

In line with Malaysia’s move towards ending the use of single-used plastics, Sunway Citrine Hub is celebrating World Environment Day this June with a Bring Your Own Straw (BYOS) campaign.

This initiative is part of Sunway Malls’ commitment to introduce metal straws in all of their malls, encouraging visitors to bring their own metal straws or any other environment-friendly straws. It is also a call for the restaurants and cafés in the malls to stop providing plastic straw to their visitors.

Together with Sunway Iskandar, the community hub has constructed a pledge wall for the public to pledge their support to end the use of plastic straws. Those who sign the pledge will receive a complimentary pack of Sunway Malls metal straw. Visitors who spent more than RM100 in two receipts will also be rewarded with the pack of Sunway Malls metal straws.

Sunway Citrine Hub will be Johor’s first environment-friendly community hub with the successful end of plastic straws in its vicinity.

“Sunway Group as a whole is committed to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and we, as Sunway’s group of malls, should do our part where we can, to fulfil the commitment. We have been advocating the use of recycle bags since 2017 and now, we are advocating the use of metal straws. Under the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry’s Roadmap Towards Zero Single-use Plastics, there will be no more drinking straws and plastic carrier bags by 2030. Our business partners, shoppers and visitors would need to come together so we collaborate to make this happen,” said HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks.

World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

Sunway Citrine Hub is also providing two yellow containers to collect recyclable materials and books. The books will be donated to two schools, SJK(C) Ming Chih and SJK(C) Pei Hwa. As for the recyclable materials, recycling workshops will be held in the community hub to teach the public the art of upcycling, as well as to encourage the reuse of recyclable materials through upcycling.

“Sunway Citrine Hub is a year old now, and it is fitting in comfortably with the community here in Johor. We have achieved 100% occupancy and we are pleased with the growth of this retail development thus far. With the opening of Sunway Big Box Village come December this year, Sunway Malls will make a stronger presence in Johor and we welcome the community of Johor to enjoy the experiences we will bring to you,” said Chan.

Poised to be the first of its kind retail park in the country that features big warehouse concept stores in an open-air strip mall environment, Johorians can look forward to Sunway Malls’ seventh retail development in Malaysia by the end of this year, following Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Carnival Mall, Sunway Giza Mall, Sunway Putra Mall, Sunway Velocity Mall and Sunway Citrine Hub.

Chan also stated there will be an announcement soon to reveal the brands coming into Sunway Big Box Village as well as the soft opening date in December.
