Warm greetings from the lady that was flown all the way from Thailand to make you authentic Som Tam or Thai Mango Salad

A bite of buka puasa at Amari Hotel Johor Bahru would come with beats of the harmonious traditional Malay music, a heartfelt rendition of religious incantation and soulful vocals with a touch of Thai hospitality in its Amaya Gallery for their Selera Gurindam Buffet this year.

Having known that the proceeds for the buffet you purchase would help charities is a very big plus and, that’s not all, as you may stand a chance to win an Umrah package.

Amari Hotel Johor Bahru outdid itself by having your taste buds and ears enjoy the great rendition of local favourites as well as their specialty Thai dishes.

A pleasant surprise to me was to find a hot from the huge kawah of Beef Stew, or Sup Gearbox Tulang Merah as locals call it that is so rich and flavourful. I forgot to eat it with bread or rice, and had it just as it is. If you’re in need of collagen and fat to be replenished after a hard day of fasting, this dish is perfect for that job.

The talk of my table was the Seafood Creamy Salted Egg, a good mix of prawns, crabs, calamari, green mussels, and clams. The dish that is served in the Chinese food section had gathered so much love that it extends from table to table.

Finding ways to wash down all the goodness before you could go to the next dish? Worry not for there is an array of ice cold salads, from the western style to the kampung ulam-ulaman.

The Thai section is a must for everyone. Your favourite Amari Hotel Johor Bahru Thai lady has returned for this year’s buffet to serve you authentic Thai Som Tam or papaya/mango salad drenched in fish sauce and peanuts, Thai Mango Sticky Rice, and the hot bowl of Beef Noodle that warms your mind, body, and soul.

There is an adventure awaiting you at the dessert section, where I found hot, Pandan Sangkaya in a huge bowl for my fruits and marshmallows. To my pleasant surprise, it was perfect for my very much Southeast Asian taste buds. Nothing beats pandan, coconut, and some sprinkle of sugar!

Sangkaya for a change! A unique dessert, and a must try

Don’t miss out on the Cendol on its own, as kuih, without the ice! The sizeful red bean, cendol, coconut milk, and corn bits turned out to be a fun dessert! You could also throw it in your bowl of shaved ice and make your normal cendol easy peasy.

We had a round of Teh Tarik to conclude our fast-breaking while enjoying the live band performance on stage, chatting away, and comparing favourite dishes in the buffet; it was the perfect way to end the evening before we parted ways after a good, shared session of buka puasa.

The Selera Gurindam buffet would take place until 30th March 2025 from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm and is priced at RM168 nett per adult, RM128 net per senior, and RM88 nett per child. Groups can enjoy an exclusive Buy 10, Get 1 Free offer throughout the promotional period.

Adding to the excitement, guests who spend RM1,000 in a single receipt stand a chance to win an Umrah package for two in a special lucky draw.
