The first trip is for the landmarks. The return trip is when travellers can slow down, revisit the meal they kept thinking about and finally explore the neighbourhood they skipped.
Digital travel platform Agoda’s latest Repeat Visitor Ranking shows that Asia’s most-loved destinations still have plenty of pull. Based on Agoda booking data from the first half of 2026, Tokyo has moved from second place to number one, overtaking Bangkok. Nine of last year’s top 10 destinations remain in this year’s ranking.
Tokyo is followed by Bangkok in second place and Bali in third. Seoul and Osaka complete the top five, followed by Da Nang, Kuala Lumpur, Fukuoka, Taipei and Johor Bahru.
A repeat trip does not have to mean repeating the same holiday. Tokyo can change completely with the season or neighbourhood. Travellers who covered the landmarks the first time can return for smaller food streets, local shopping districts, live events and the places they ran out of time to see.
Bangkok and Bali offer the same room to reset the itinerary. A first visit to Bangkok might centre on temples and markets, while the next can be built around wellness, dining or a slower riverside stay. In Bali, travellers can swap the beach for inland landscapes, creative neighbourhoods or a retreat focused on rest.
Closer to home, Kuala Lumpur holds seventh place in Asia, while Johor Bahru remains in the top 10 at number 10. Within Malaysia, the five leading repeat-visitor destinations are Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Miri.
That range makes familiar cities easier to reframe: Kuala Lumpur for a food or culture-led staycation, Penang for another round of eating and heritage walks, Johor Bahru for fun family activities and beaches, and Kota Kinabalu or Miri for a more nature-led return.
Fukuoka gives travellers another way back to Japan
Fukuoka is the sole new entrant to Asia’s top 10, climbing three places from number 11 to number eight. For travellers who already know Tokyo and Osaka, the compact coastal city offers a different kind of Japanese break, shaped by yatai food stalls, Hakata ramen and a more relaxed pace.
Da Nang also gained ground, rising two places to sixth. Its combination of beaches, city life and easy access to heritage destinations such as Hoi An gives returning travellers room to build a different trip around the same base.
At a country level, the ranking remains unchanged. Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia are the five leading countries for repeat visitors, showing that travellers can keep returning to a country they love without booking the same experience twice.
Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, said, “Tokyo taking the top spot is the headline, but the more revealing finding is that nine of last year’s top 10 destinations remain. Repeat travel is not a lack of curiosity. Familiarity can give travellers the confidence to go beyond the obvious, whether that means staying in another neighbourhood, travelling in a different season or choosing a second city within a country they already know. Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru sitting alongside Tokyo, Bangkok and Bali also shows that Malaysian destinations can command the same kind of repeat appeal as Asia’s biggest travel favourites. Agoda helps travellers turn that familiarity into a different trip by bringing stays, flights and activities together in one place.”
The ranking is a reminder that a repeat destination does not have to mean a repeat holiday. Travellers can return in a new season, stay in another part of town or build the trip around the experiences they missed the first time.
For travellers looking to revisit a favourite destination or find a new one, Agoda offers over 6 million holiday properties, more than 130,000 flight routes and over 300,000 activities, which can be combined in a single booking. Visit Agoda.com or download the Agoda mobile app for the best deals.
