Thistle Johor Bahru never misses in its servings for buka puasa buffet. Growing up, my family used to attend the hotel’s buffet at least once a year and it would be during the fasting month where we whet our day’s fasting appetite with its delightful dishes.
Now, as an adult myself, it surprises me that the hotel maintains its reputation to always serve local’s favourites and according to our very own tastebuds, especially for the true blue Johoreans and some Singaporeans, if I may add!
This year, as always, its Nostalgia Selera Kampung buka puasa buffet came up with a new specialty; the Ayam Pasu or chicken baked in clay pots that helps preserve the juiciness of the baked chicken and keeps the meat tender and easy to eat with almost anything—plain rice, Nasi Arab, Roti Canai, Murtabak, or any other carbs that you could think of.
The Whole Roasted Lamb is the star and a Ramadan’s favourite, according to Joshua Wong, Thistle Johor Bahru’s Marcom Manager. It is proven with long lines of eager diners, patiently waiting for their share of lamb slices, to replenish the protein and reward oneself after a day’s fasting.
Locals would be elated to have Laksa Johor and Mee Bandung stalls in their lines of live cooking stations that serve the perfectly measured flavours and spices in each bowl of their laksa and noodle, just like how grandmothers would make in kampung. Not to miss is the fresh Durian Stall coming all the way from the orchard, exclusively to Orchid Ballroom’s courtyard, where it opens for people at a set time so everyone could have a fair share of the sweet flesh of the king of fruit.
Children and sweet tooth alike would be having a hard time to choose from the wide array of desserts, from local Kuih-muih to French pastries and fresh durian desserts, up for grabs for those who are quick on their feet as the durian ones clears up in no time!
The buffet is just like a kenduri in kampung, where guests are treated to daily live entertainment, giveaway sessions, and engaging activities throughout the Ramadan period.
