Airbnb Data Reveals Travel Trends Among Women Guests and Hosts in Malaysia

As the world came together to celebrate International Women’s Day last Saturday, Airbnb shone a spotlight on the incredible women hosts and travellers on its platform and the lasting impact they have on the future of hospitality and travel

Women have long played a crucial role in the Airbnb community, from creating welcoming stays to driving economic empowerment through hosting. Globally, women make up more than 54% of Airbnb hosts, with women-led listings making up almost 55% of all Guest Favourite homes on the platform1.

Here are some ways in which hosts, self-identified as women, excelled on Airbnb in 20242:

  • Earnings: The typical woman host in Malaysia earned RM 8,815 in 2024 3
  • Guest Favourite Listings: More than 40% of all Guest Favourite listings in Malaysia are hosted by women.
  • Five-star ratings: In 2024, almost 50% of female hosts received 5-star reviews in Malaysia.

Airbnb data also revealed key travel trends among Malaysian women in 2024, which include4:

  • Most booked domestic cities: Kuala Lumpur was the most booked city by female travellers in Malaysia, followed by Johor Bahru, Selangor, Melaka and Penang.
  • Most booked international cities: Airbnb data also revealed Taipei as the most booked international destination for Malaysian women, with Bangkok ranking as their favourite city, followed by Melbourne and Busan.
  • Trending domestic destinations: Mersing, Johor saw an estimated 30% increase in nights booked by female guests, making it the top trending destination in Malaysia, followed closely by Dungun, Gombak, Kemaman and Kluang.
  • Duo travel remains the most popular travel style among Malaysian female guests in 2024.
  • Women aged 30 to 39 accounted for the majority of nights booked by female travelers in Malaysia, making this age group the most active on Airbnb.
