Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) has won their 12th consecutive Super League title, demonstrating their dominance over the domestic football scene by securing the title with five matches remaining.
The Southern Tigers’ 3-0 triumph over DPMM FC at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, was the 19th game in a winning streak that started earlier in the season, and they have yet to give up a point this year.
The visitors had to wait until the 33rd minute to score on a free kick by Ager Aketxe that deflected off the goalpost into the net after JDT’s first goal in the 20th minute was declared offside following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Midfielder Ibrahim Sulley’s slightly off-target attempt in the 52nd minute and Muhammad Hakeme Yazid Said’s offside goal three minutes later gave DPMM two opportunities to tie the score in the second half.
Oscar Arribas’ close-range goal in the 74th minute gave JDT the lead, and Marcos Guilherme’s third goal put DPMM out of the game and won the team’s historic 12th straight title.
JDT said in a statement that it now shares the second-longest league title streak in the world with FC Istiklol of Tajikistan after the Malaysian Football League confirmed the 12th streak via Facebook.
JDT is officially ranked among the top ten clubs in the world, including streaks that have ended. JDT’s record of 12 consecutive Malaysia Super League titles has surpassed the achievements of European giants such as Bayern Munich (Germany), which previously held a record of 11 consecutive league titles.
In terms of active streaks, JDT is now only behind Bulgarian PFC Ludogorets (14 consecutive titles) and Vanuatu’s Tafea FC (15 consecutive titles).
