YHL Aquatic Sdn Bhd, a YHL Group of company, has achieved another significant milestone in advancing the country’s shrimp farming industry with the launch of shrimp farming using seeds derived from broodstock developed by YHL itself. The launch of the shrimp farming, known as YHL-Phi Tik, was officiated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Isham bin Ishak.

During the event, Datuk Seri Isham also launched the YHL Shrimp Nucleus Centre, the first of its kind in Malaysia. In his speech, he remarked, “The meticulous and inclusive development demonstrates the strong commitment of YHL, especially their involvement in developing and owning their own genetic technology for breeding white shrimp, for the production of broodstock and shrimp seeds.”

The development of the Broodstock Multiplication Centre (BMC) for shrimp breeding is a key component of the YHL Shrimp Nucleus Centre located in Mersing, Johor marking the first of its kind developed in the country by a Malaysian company. “KPKM strongly supports the development efforts undertaken by YHL, which align with KPKM’s focus under the 2021-2030 Aquaculture Strategic Plan to increase aquaculture production and modernize the sector, in line with the food security agenda and to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported sources,” said Datuk Seri Isham.

YHL Aquatic has successfully made significant strides and now possesses a complete value chain within the shrimp farming industry in Malaysia. Its development now includes upstream activities through the operation of the Nucleus Centre in Mersing, a 216.5 acre farming operation in Desaru, as well as processing and marketing of frozen products at the downstream level.

In his address, Low Yuan Heng, Managing Director of YHL Group, emphasised, “The breeding development carried out through genetic selection aims to produce shrimp with high growth rates, survival rates, disease resistance, and environmental tolerance, with brighter-colored shrimp. The primary goal of YHL’s own breeding program is to address the biggest challenge in the aquaculture industry – disease management.”

Also present at the event were Dato’ Haji Adnan bin Hussain, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Hamdan Bin Mamat, Director General of LKIM, officials from KPKM, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, LKIM, local and state authorities, as well as shareholders of YHL Foods.

YHL Aquatic Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of YHL Foods, engaged in the integration of aquaculture development activities, including the development of nucleus centres, breeding, seeding, farming, and frozen processing for white shrimp, oysters, and shellfish, as well as eco-tourism activities.
