Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) supports the government’s efforts to witness a reduction in the price of Imported White Rice (BPI), to ease the cost of living for Malaysians.
In line with the announcement by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Haji Mohamad Sabu, on Friday, BERNAS will implement a price reduction at its warehouse gates in Peninsular Malaysia from RM3,000 to RM2,800 per metric tonne, effective 1st December 2024.
This reduction aligns with the strengthening of the Ringgit against the US Dollar and is further driven by the drop in price in the global rice market following the recent lifting of the export ban and as well as the abolition of export duties on non-basmati white rice by the Indian government.
Earlier this year, in March 2024, BERNAS reduced the BPI price from RM3,200 to RM3,000 per metric tonne, despite price trends hovering at their highest levels over the past 15 years. This underscores BERNAS’ commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) and industry stakeholders to ensure product availability and uphold food security objectives.
Currently, Malaysia continues to offer the lowest prices for imported rice in Southeast Asia. BERNAS remains committed in adopting a proactive approach to monitoring global market conditions and adjusting prices as necessary.
