SUKMA XXI Sarawak: Johor Sent 599 Athletes and Aims for 60 Gold

As the previous SUKMA overall champion, Johor maintains giving out an incentive of RM10,000 for every gold winner

In conjunction with the XXI Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Sarawak 2024, the Johor State Government, via the Johor State Sports Council, had arranged the SUKMA Johor 2024 Contingent Flag Presentation Ceremony, held at the Main Hall of the Iskandar Puteri City Council.

Mohd Hairi bin Mad Shah, Chairman of the Johor State Youth & Sports, Entrepreneurship, and Cooperative Development Committee, completed the ceremony by handing over the contingent flag to Datuk Pandak bin Ahmad, Chef De Mission SUKMA Johor, and then to Umar Osman, contingent flag bearer SUKMA Johor, who will compete in SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024.

The presentation of this flag is symbolic and a tradition that demonstrates the people of Johor’s unwavering support for the athletes who will carry the state’s responsibility and hopes on the country’s biggest sporting stage.

Johor is sending 599 athletes and 188 officials representing various sports disciplines who will compete in SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, bringing a strong fighting spirit and determination to make the state proud.

Mohd Hairi inspired the athletes with his speech, reminding them of the importance of sportsmanship, discipline, and hard work in order to succeed.

“For the athletes, we are aiming for the first 60 medals for the 2024 edition. We will send 36 sports competitions that will be contested for the state of Johor. We remain with an incentive of RM10,000 for the athletes who manage to win a gold medal,” he said in a statement.

He also expressed confidence that the Johor contingent will achieve great success at SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, bringing the state’s name to the forefront of the national sports scene.

Johor made history at the Kuala Lumpur SUKMA, emerging as the overall champion for the first time in the sports event that has been held since 1986, winning 77 gold, 52 silver, and 43 bronze, exceeding the set target of 40 gold.

The ceremony was also attended by Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Haji Azmi bin Rohani, Secretary to the Johor Government; Honourable Dato’ Haji On bin Jabbar @ Ja’afar, Deputy Secretary of the Johor Government (Sports, Youth and Volunteers); Ts. Mohd Ekmaluddin Ishak, Director of the Johor State Sports Council; Datuk Pandak bin Ahmad, Head of SUKMA Johor Contingent; Dato’ Haji Mohd Noorazam bin Dato’ Haji Osman, Deputy Head of SUKMA Johor I Contingent; Hajah Hasrunizah Hassan, Deputy Head of SUKMA Johor II Contingent; and Muhamad Farkhan bin Haji Mohd Haron, Deputy Head of Johor III Contingent.

Sarawak will host SUKMA 2024 from 17h to 24th Aug featuring 37 sporting events.
