Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB) organised its yearly corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, MHB Free Market, at MMHE West yard, Pasir Gudang, with the goal of relieving the burden of the surrounding impoverished population. The initiative, which offered a free marketplace for necessities like groceries and both new and used goods, was a partnership between Ihsan Johor, Pasir Gudang City Council, and the Johor Bahru District Office.

During a donation drive that took place from the 3rd to the 25th of October 2023, MHB workers, clients, and subcontractors donated necessities such clothes, shoes, bags, toys, books, and groceries. This programme benefited 125 families from four villages in Pasir Gudang, Johor: Pasir Gudang Baru, Pasir Putih, Tanjung Langsat, and Perigi Acheh; 50 students from Asrama Kebajikan Ar Rayyan; 20 students from Institut Latihan Perindustrian Pasir Gudang; 15 students from Johor Skills Development Centre Pasir Gudang; and 50 students from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang.

The event was graced by Pandai Othman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MHB, Mohd Afiff Mohd Adzhar (representing Johor Bahru District Officer), and Zanariah Kadir (representing Mayor of Pasir Gudang City Council).

MHB, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment as a responsible and caring corporate entity. Over the years, MHB has made substantial investments in Pasir Gudang through a diverse range of CSR initiatives. These endeavours are aimed at fostering community engagement and establishing sustainable communities.

Among its notable CSR initiatives in Pasir Gudang include MHB River Rehabilitation Programme, a dedicated effort to restore and preserve the local river ecosystem, and MHB Art of Science, a unique platform to stimulate creativity and innovation within students.

Othman, MD & CEO of MHB said, “As MHB marks its five decades of existence within the Pasir Gudang community, we believe that it is our duty to help in building enduring and thriving communities who have supported us throughout the years. The MHB Free Market is an opportunity for us to show that we care and to give back.

The recipients were treated to a half-day event filled with fun carnival-like activities which also includes free health check-ups, entertainment and many others. The event is not just about giving donation but to create a positive and memorable experience to the recipients with MHB.

We are hopeful to continuously support our community to create a positive difference in their lives. We would like to thank our key stakeholders who have worked with us and helped us in establishing long-standing partnerships with; Johor Bahru District Office, Pasir Gudang City Council and Ihsan Johor, for making this programme a success. My special and most sincere thanks to all the volunteers who have been working tirelessly for weeks receiving and sorting the donation items, contributors and sponsors who have made this event possible.

By focusing on equity and sustainability, we are committed to ensure that our presence leaves a positive and lasting impact on the Pasir Gudang region.”
