To make it simpler for people to prepare for the festival and travel back to their hometowns, the government has agreed to proclaim an additional public holiday in connection with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The government would proclaim Monday, 24 April, as an additional public holiday for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan in accordance with Section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951, the PM said, if 1 Syawal falls on Friday (21 April).

If 1 Syawal fell on Saturday, he said, the administration would announce Friday, 21 April, as an additional public holiday (22 April).

“For Sabah and Sarawak, the state governments can declare the public holiday on the relevant date in accordance with their respective Public Holiday Ordinance,” Anwar said.

The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal will officially proclaim the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration date on Thursday, 20 April, 1 Syawal 1444H.
