The Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) has issued a statement regarding the Disaster Operations Preparedness Notice issued by the National Disaster Control Centre (NDCC), National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) on 28th February 2023 following the Persistent Rain Warning (Danger) involving several states, particularly in Johor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka, as well as the warning (Beware) involving Perak, Selangor, Kuala Terengganu, WP Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.
Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Johor Bahru, and Pontian are the seven (7) districts in Johor that was affected until 1st March 2023.
JKR Malaysia stated in its statement that the following immediate actions have been and are being taken:
Activation of the Disaster Operations Control Centre
The Johor State Disaster Operations Control Centre was activated immediately at 8 a.m. Every four (4) hours, the most recent reporting of disaster events in each affected district will be updated.
JKR Disaster Management Malaysia’s official website will be updated with the report (e-Bencana).
State and District JKR are also available to assist the public in channelling the most recent information and inquiries regarding road closures.
Cooperation between the Federal and State Concessionaires
Concessionaires and the District JKR are also stationed along the flooded route in case of an unexpected emergency.
In addition, the Federal and State Concessionaires have prepared a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) to aid in traffic control in the affected areas.
Simultaneously, the rising and falling water level is monitored to ensure that the road or path can be opened to the public or not.
The District Engineer’s Allocation of RM250K Has Been Disbursed
For the districts that are still in the process of appointing state concessions, i.e. Kluang, Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar and Tangkak Districts, an allocation of RM250,000 has been channeled immediately for the use of the District Engineer (JD) according to urgent needs following the current flood situation in the state of Johor.
List of Road Damage Due to Flooding
Most of the affected roads involve the Federal Roads. The Federal Concessionaire and the District’s JKR will identify damaged roads for the purpose of applying for the allocation of repair works.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Assistance
JKR Malaysia is always prepared to activate the department’s assets in the event of an emergency, including the readiness of the Bailey bridge team and the department’s assets.
The statement said that the JKR Kota Tinggi team has assisted in transporting students taking the SPM exam as well as patients to the hospital.
Dissemination of Latest Information Related to Flood Disasters
“The public can obtain information on the status of the roads involved as well as alternative roads for roads closed due to flooding by contacting JKR Malaysia’s Disaster Operations Room at 03-2610 7727 or visiting the website http://bencanaalam.jkr.qov.my” said the statement.
“The public can also obtain information on alternative routes through JKR Malaysia’s official social pages, which are facebook jkr.malaysia, twitter @jkrMalaysia and instagram @jkrmalaysia.”
“The public is advised to always be careful on the road, be aware and obey the signs and instructions of the Authority from time to time,” the statement ends.
