Ihsan Johor, a non-government organisation and recipient of the Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards (IMSHA), is sending 4 volunteers to flood-stricken Pakistan for a relief mission from the 6th of October to the 13th of October. Four of the days would be spent on travelling time alone with disconnected routes in Pakistan due to the massive tragedy involving 33 million flood victims.
The NGO’s Chief Executive Officer, Farrah Faridah Baptist, told reporters during the flag-off for the mission that the four of them would include her.
“After conducting a study and review with an NGO based in Pakistan, and discussing with the members of the board of directors, we decided to jointly extend some aid to the affected Pakistanis with necessities needed,” she said.
The relief mission will bring in three tonnes of goods donated by the public and corporate companies involving hygiene kits, medicine, milk and baby diapers, 200 kilogrammes of winter clothes, mats and drinking water.
“Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor (YRZSNJ) has also contributed 120 cubic tents to help flood victims who lost their homes in Pakistan,” she added.
In the meantime, Farrah Faridah said the organisation works closely with NGOs in Pakistan who will help coordinate in terms of logistics to send aid to the affected population.
She said the organisation will be taken to a state in the North and South of Pakistan to send aid in addition to channelling needed aid to the affected population.
“We were informed that the residents are in dire need of canvas tents due to millions of people in the country being homeless and now sleeping only in open areas near their homes.
“Even though the donations brought cannot help all the people of Pakistan, it is hoped that it eases the burden of the affected population,” she added.
Known to be helping the state’s flood victims annually, Farrah said their overseas mission would not deter the help that they do in Malaysia and after the flag-off, their team went to help the flooded area in Kangkar Tebrau.
The NGO is currently collecting ready-to-eat dry food supplies for the state’s flood victims.
“As a result of our work involved in the flood relief mission in Segamat, Johor and several other states including Kedah and Pahang, flood victims need help with ready-to-eat dry food so that it can be immediately distributed when disaster strikes,” she said.
Among the items that were most requested by the flood victims, were detergent and bleaching liquids besides sanitary napkins which the NGO is currently collecting.
