Leading integrated township Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP) is a strategic partner to Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri MBIP, in the ‘100 Days Johor Bersih’ programme. The expression of support towards the 100 Days Johor Bersih movement is seen in a Go Green event undertaken by SCIP in three parts: a mud ball dispersal activity, tree-planting commitment under the 100 Million Trees campaign and introduction to the latest recycling effort in the community. This significant event was officiated by Dato’ Haji Mohd Haffiz Bin Haji Ahmad, Datuk Bandar Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri and Dato’ Haji Salim Bin Aman, Johor State Director of Forestry, together with Green Earth Society (GES), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), SWM Environment Sdn Bhd, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor (JPNJ) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Launched by Datuk Onn Hafiz Bin Dato’ Ghazi, Johor’s Menteri Besar, Johor Bersih is a programme designed to establish Johor as Malaysia’s cleanest and most vibrant state while encouraging its residents to continuously keep their state clean and vibrant. The event was attended by one of SCIP’s educational institutions, Sunway International School, as a vehicle to educate the younger generation about the importance of clean water and preserving the environment, while taking sustainable actions that will benefit the community in the long run.

Children having a go at making the mud balls – an ideal method for purifying water

“As nature’s capital city, sustainability is deeply rooted in our beliefs and is at the forefront of our development. Our Go Green campaign fully reflects our beliefs in championing United Nations Sustainability Development Goals. Moreover, our action plan such as the distribution of mud balls, focuses on creating similar outcomes as the state’s Johor Bersih programme” explained Gerard Soosay, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.

Mud balls are enriched with effective and beneficial microorganisms that stop algae growth, break down sludge, suppress pathogens and eliminate foul odours from chemical imbalances in water. To fully reap the benefits of this treatment, mud balls must be released strategically and evenly around Sunway Emerald Lake.

“Mud balls are an ideal method as it is one of the most successful techniques for purifying water. For this initiative, we are grateful to work with like-minded partners such as non-profit organisation, Green Earth Society (GES) who equally value the importance of preserving the environment the best way possible.”

SCIP also supports the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Johor state Forestry Department’s nationwide 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign by 2025, which was also announced at the event. To date, SCIP has recorded more than 15,000 trees planted under this campaign.

“The need to carry out these initiatives is vital as SCIP is looking for ways that will not only preserve the cleanliness of the lake but the overall ecosystem of the township through sustainable methods such as generating solar power, reducing waste, eliminating pollution, etc. which will, in turn, create a greener outcome for society,” shared Gerard.

The event ended with a visit to the new recycling centre at Sunway GRID which was kick-started with an RM16,000 grant award through the Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon 2.0 campaign. This recycling centre will reward the efforts of contributors, through a point system that generates monetary credit. The officiation of this recycling centre during the event reinforced the community’s ongoing and unified commitment to preserving mother earth.
