Skye Renewables Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Skye), a Southeast Asian solar energy developer, announced an agreement to construct a 649.6 kWp rooftop solar system on the EduCity Complex 1 building, which is part of EduCity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EduCity Iskandar) in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
Witnessing the agreement was Raven Kumar Krishnasamy, chairman of Johor Tourism, Environment, Heritage and Culture.
“I am excited to see this new smart partnership between EduCity Iskandar and Skye Renewables, a prestigious international partner, as this initiative also supports Johor’s sustainability ambitions that include promoting a cleaner environment with technology that will be able also to boost the state’s economic productivity,” he said in his speech, citing that there is the need to educate the community within the state about sustainability and the fact that the subject is one of youth’s main concern.
Wan Ahmad Saifuddin, EduCity Iskandar Managing Director further supported Raven’s message and said, “This smart partnership supports EduCity Iskandar’s more significant aspiration to drive several SDG efforts, just like the recent announcement of the partnership with NanoMalaysia where we will introduce an electric vehicle (EV) Zone including battery change stations and access for 2-wheeler drivers such as electric scooters that will improve EduCity’s infra and shared facilities. In addition to the EV project, this power purchase agreement will support EduCity Iskandar’s positioning as an education city that supports green technology initiatives.” He also stated that there would be two main EV stations in EduCity in the pipeline which are the EduCity Hub and EduCity’s stadium.
Meanwhile, Skye Founder & CEO, Ross Coull shared that they are truly delighted to be selected by EduCity to become their solar development partner with this first project. “We hope to support them with additional renewable energy projects and work together on some new and innovative sustainability actions.”
Over the course of the contract, the solar system is expected to generate more than 15GWh of power, allowing EduCity to avoid significant carbon emissions by replacing some grid usage. This is equivalent to removing 10,055 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
