Boost for Junior Golf

SportExcel’s Junior Golf received a boost from UUMISM (University Utara Malaysia International Secondary School) and Tourism Johor which came forward to sponsor the annual SportExcel Junior Golf Tour.

For the year 2022, UUMISM’s and Tourism Johor’s contributions were RM40,000 and RM20,000 respectively. UUMISM also sponsored RM100,000 for the 2020/21 Junior Golf tour.

The tour consists of 5 legs and a grand final was played throughout Malaysia.

The second leg was held at Tg. Puteri Golf Resort on the 29th of May and showcased 169 players from five age groups, inclusive of boys and girls.

The age categories were 15-18-year-olds, 13-14 year-olds, 11-12 year-olds, 9-10 year-olds and 6-8 year-olds.

SportExcel, with the support of the private sector and the government has played a very important role in junior golf development for the past 30 years.

The tour consists of a total of 12 legs annually, creating the opportunity for the juniors to compete and slowly, but certainly improve their golfing skills over the years.

Many juniors have received golf scholarships from US Colleges to pursue their studies as well as their golf in these universities. Currently, there are over 50 Malaysian junior golfers in the US, all on scholarships.

The recent Men’s and Women’s teams SEA Games medal winners, all actively participated in the junior, elite and international competitions organised by SportExcel since these players were as young as seven and eight years old.

Annually, SportExcel organises 12-15 junior golf competitions. Pros Gavin Green, Kelly Tan and many local pros grew up with SportExcel.
