UTM Students Declare TEDx Spirit Stays Despite the Pandemic

Grappling with the new normal challenges, the tertiary students preserve

TEDxUTM has become an annual event at UTM, and this year’s theme, ‘Re!magine Limits,’ encourages people from all walks of life to reconnect, collectively empower, and break free from constrained walls.

Re!magine.com is a social enterprise that challenges people to redefine their capabilities. The team believes that nothing is unchangeable or certain, and they endeavour to go beyond the existing conventional mind frame. ‘Re!’magine is a future for people that dare to dream their own paths and explore the world.

TEDxUTM2021 invited a total of nine speakers from diverse backgrounds including Asia’s first female MiG-29N fighter pilot, military pilot and flight instructor, Lt Col Patricia Yapp RMAF. The event brought in ideas worth spreading to the community, and the speakers included UX Researcher, Nicolette Wei Mei Wong, author Arisha Akhir, leadership coach Marcus Loh and architect Sarly Adre Sarkum.

The UTM team hosted its first event online with over 100 participants. The team collaborated with a few partners in the networking sessions such as Folk It De Artland, Sun and Moon Pottery Studio and Ryan Chung Han for a yo-yo performance. UTM performers were also invited into the entertaining sessions.

According to the Director of TEDxUTM2021, Fu Shin Jie, the board of committee consists of 38 UTM students from various schools.

“In light of the COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia, it was a blessed misfortune for this term’s event to be hosted online. Although, we lost the opportunity to grant our participants with physical TEDx experience like always, however, our team embraced this new norm by bringing the same inspiring dose of talks online with over 400 registrations. Moving forward, we certainly hope to return with physical events in continuation of sparking the lights of ideas sharing in UTM,” said Fu Shin Jie.
