Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has proclaimed a state of emergency nationwide from Tuesday (12th January) until 1st August 2021 as a proactive measure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic

The King has proclaimed a state of emergency on Tuesday, 12th January 2020 morning effective the same date until 1st of August 2021 in order to curb the further spread of COVID-19 pandemic situation in the nation.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin held a statement on the nation’s situation shortly after the King’s proclamation:

  1. The government had to act (in obtaining an emergency proclamation) because there is no indication of a decline in cases of COVID-19.
  2. The emergency proclamation is not a military coup; no curfew will be imposed.
  3. During the emergency phase, the civilian government will continue to work.
  4. During the time of emergency, general elections, state elections and by-elections will not be held.
  5. For a defined period of time, Parliament and state legislative bodies may not convene.
  6. If the Independent Committee recommends the country has recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, a general election will be held.
  7. In an attempt to contain COVID-19, it calls on lawmakers to be in harmony with people.
  8. The Securities Commission, Bursa Malaysia, will continue to play the role of market facilitator.
  9. It urges people to remain calm and place their confidence in the government in order to effectively contain COVID-19.
  10. Warns of firm action against those seeking to hinder government efforts to counter the pandemic of COVID-19 and control the economy of the country.
  11. The Agong may proclaim an order against economic sabotage, monopoly, and unreasonable price rises of goods.
