The Meeting Of Handcrafted

In October this year, Royal Selangor launched a creative initiative called the “A Weekend @ The Café”, where homegrown restaurants are invited to showcase their culinary crafts at Royal Selangor Visitor Centre in-house café. This created an opportunity for locals to spend a resplendent weekend appreciating Malaysian history, arts and culture paired with good food — all with just a stone’s throw away from home.

On 19th and 20th December, Royal Selangor, the esteemed time-honoured brand in quality pewter was joined by Ombak Kitchen, the leading premium seafood restaurant famed for its very Malaysian “Pakai tangan jer…” concept in offering a unique weekend enriched by a 135-year pewtersmithing heritage and the finest in seafood dining.

Ombak Kitchen is a renowned household name for celebrations and a hotspot for gathering due to its fuss-free “Pakai tangan jer…”, an Insta-friendly dining concept and its double-boiling cooking method which keeps natural seafood flavours intact.

The weekend started off with a guided tour through the archive of Royal Selangor at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, showcasing the extensive 135 years of history of the foremost name in quality pewter, from the humble pewtersmith that started it all to the assemblage of timeless collections dating as far back as its inception. The tour also included a run-through of the assembly line and introduction of in-house artisans that are responsible for the excellence that we see decked on the shelves of Royal Selangor retail stores, worldwide.

Last but not least, the guided tour ended on a creative note at the “School of Hard Knocks” — as the name implies, it is a workshop that involves knocking (and a lot of it too), which is one of the signature application in Royal Selangor’s myriad of designs.

After knocking hard on Royal Selangor’s door, a delectable spread of the finest seafood was served at The Café by Ombak Kitchen. The spread includes a selection of premium ocean-fresh catch such as prawns and mussels among many other — fully drenched in Ombak’s signature sauce, meant to be savoured the Malaysian way!

Not only have these pioneers made their marks and gained numerous accolades in their respective fields, but they have also figured out one thing — history and good food, go hand in hand especially when indulged with hands.

For those yearning to explore the timeless archive, Royal Selangor Visitor Centre offers daily complimentary guided tours (including PH) from 9am to 5pm. If you are feeling crafty and would like to bring home a Royal Selangor personalised keepsake, you can book a hands-on pewtersmithing session at the “School or Hard Knocks” or “The Foundry” — at an additional charge of RM65/pax and RM180/pax respectively.
