Problems persist each time ladies take their wheels to the workshop, i.e. the possibilities of getting cheated of their money! There are also issues like having to depend on male figures to handle their vehicles for so long and when there are none available at the time of need, the vehicles are left unattended due to the unfamiliarity of how to deal with it.
This has been the founder of Johor Lady Drivers Only (JHLDO), Malisa New’s concerns when she coordinated work in her family’s car workshop for 10 years together with her sister, Wendy New. Seeing the problems persisting when it involves lady drivers, they tried their best to help them out and gathered all their courage to break the norms and found JHLDO as a safe space for women.
Her extensive knowledge was obtained while coordinating between supplies and mechanics, as she had to know what spare parts were needed for which issues in the car and one thing led to another, she had more than enough experience to fix cars and is now ready to help other ladies with their wheels.
JHLDO is a young community with free membership specifically for women in Johor Bahru. Aiming to provide a women-friendly car workshop services, the growing community also holds learning and sharing sessions about vehicles in a Facebook group and through live broadcast hosted by Loft Affair. Malisa hopes that this effort would help women to be more pro-active on car maintenance and that the perception of ladies being unfamiliar with their vehicles would be a thing of the past.
