Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Musa Hitam gave his approval to Johor State Government’s subsidiary, Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor Sdn Bhd (KPRJ) in the effort of building world-class sports facilities.
The statesman who is also a native of Johor said, “I decided to visit this Velodrome after hearing a lot from friends about a magnificent building in Iskandar Puteri,” he said after a visit to the Johor Velodrome and BMX Track in Iskandar Princess yesterday afternoon.
He hopes that more new talents in cycling to represent the country in international competitions would be developed from the venue.
The Johor Velodrome, located on an area of 2.54 hectares, has a 250 metre long track according to Union standards International Cycling (UCI) and able to accommodate a total of 700 spectators.
General Manager of the Johor Stadium Corporation, Gadaffie Aziz expressed his gratitude for Tun Musa Hitam’s visit to the Johor Velodrome which is a new landmark in the state of Johor.
“I thank Tun Musa Hitam for coming to see for himself the development of this Johor Velodrome. As a Johor native, I am sure he is also very proud to see this achievement and we will use this Velodrome as best we can.
Pandemic and Venue Usage
Gadaffie who is also the Director of the Johor State Sports Council explained that various sports events will be organised at the Johor Velodrome and BMX Track to ensure that the court use is optimised by SUKMA XX Johor 2020 which has been rescheduled to 2022. The competition will involve several cycling teams.
Requests from International Athletes
He added that there were several requests from international cycling teams to use the Johor Velodrome as a training centre before flying to Tokyo for the 2021 Olympics.
“At the same time, we also received an unofficial application from the Polish and Mexican national teams who intend to train at the Johor Velodrome in preparation for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.”
