The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has fined RM445,800 from 1,489 summonses sent to Singapore-registered cars that did not install or activate their RFID Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tags before entering Malaysia.
According to Berita Harian, enforcement operations targeting foreign vehicles at land border checkpoints between Malaysia and Singapore were used to issue the summonses between 1st July 2025 and 3rd August 2025.
14,379 cars registered in Singapore were inspected, according to JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan.
“Most of the 1,489 car owners or drivers we have summoned so far provided similar justifications — that they didn’t know the Malaysian government had started enforcement and believed we were still in the advocacy phase,” said Muhammad.
“Under Section 66H (7) of the Road Transport Act 1987, violators face fines of up to RM300. Currently, around 90% of private automobiles in Singapore have active VEP plates,” he added.
As of 31st July 2025, JPJ had given 277,930 RFID VEP tags to Singapore-registered cars.
