According to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, within the next five years, the state government has plans to open a Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) in each district of Johor.

The second TMIYC in Muar, which is currently being built, held its groundbreaking ceremony the same year as the first TMIYC in Hutan Bandar, Johor Bahru.

“The third TMIYC in Iskandar Puteri, will begin its construction in the second quarter of next year, and is expected to be fully completed in 2024,” said Onn Hafiz.

“We are doing our best, and currently there are three, and in the pipeline two more TMIYCs in Pasir Gudang and Kluang next year. Hopefully, within five years we will be able to have it in every district,” he said at a press conference after the TMIYC Iskandar Puteri Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Educity Sports Complex, which was officiated by the Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Onn Hafiz emphasised that TMIYC, a strategic initiative and creation of Tunku Ismail, provided a conducive development space for the youth with a variety of recreational and leisure activities.

According to him, the TMIYC in Iskandar Puteri would be constructed on 10.9 hectares of land and include a Social Hub Zone with an indoor event space, an auditorium, and a space to host artistic and cultural events.

“It also has an Active Zone which contains a 6,800 square foot People’s Gym that can accommodate 200 people at a time inside the building and on the roof and a velodrome and BMX track – both of which have already been built are also located in this zone,” he said.

Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, the chairman of the State Committee for Youth, Sports, Entrepreneurship Development, Cooperatives, and Human Resources, expressed his hope that the TMIYC’s construction would benefit youths and mitigate societal issues.

“TMIYC in Hutan Bandar, for example, has successfully brought together not only the young people, but also helped strengthen family bonds while doing recreational activities,” he stated on the day of the groundbreaking ceremony.

The TMIYC in Hutan Bandar has a number of public amenities, including the Canopy Walk, Youth Centre, Mountain Bike Trails, Parkour Park, Kiddo Ground, and Skatepro.
