Tunku Mahkota Ismail, the Regent of Johor, has agreed to the joint organisation of the 2027 SEA Games football tournament in Johor. Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, chairman of the State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, and Cooperatives Committee, stated that Tunku Mahkota Ismail consented during an audience on 28th November 2024.

As a result, he said, the state government will file an official application with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) next week.

“However, the venue locations and the cost involved will be announced after discussions held between the 2027 SEA Games Secretariat, the KBS and the Johor Sports Council,” he told a media conference at the sidelines of the Johor state assembly sitting.

On 27th November, Mohd Hairi was quoted as saying that the Johor government aims to co-host the 2027 SEA Games by providing multiple football stadiums.

Mohd Hairi was cited as adding that the offer was made since the state has good football facilities and direct access to both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Earlier, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that the ministry is awaiting official confirmation from the Johor government to co-organise the 2027 SEA Games for football.

Yeoh said three states namely Penang, Sabah and Sarawak agreed to co-host with Kuala Lumpur in organising the Sea Games with Sabah though the Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said they would review and reconsider a proposal to co-host the Sea Games.
