Mention Thistle Johor Bahru (Thistle) among local Johoreans and they would nod in unison for its class and reputation. As my drive along Jalan Skudai, I could see it standing tall as an iconic building facing the Straits of Johor, with ‘Thistle’ emblazoned on the top. My memory of Thistle is of it being well known as one of the hotels with refined hospitality since the beginning of its existence.
My friend that I was about to meet at Thistle had arrived with no problem. She sent me pictures of herself among lush greeneries that backdrops what seems like an endless swimming pool with bridges, giving it a sense of resort-like ambience in the city. As I arrived and made my way to check-in, the hospitality of each staff was immaculate.
My friend and I exchanged greetings over a lunch buffet at Fresh restaurant, taking a liking to the flavourful asma rojak dipped in the smooth yet crunchy peanut sauce. Stuffed, we moved to the lobby and down to Steps restaurant where visitors were enjoying cakes, fritters and teh tarik for refreshment. Glass restaurant where dinner buffet would usually be served is just one stair down and it has a convenient access to the pool. We then took the time to burn off some calories and went for a walk while having a casual discussion around the swimming pool that stretches all the way on the grounds. There are two pools and each pool is divided for children and adults. My friend was excited to have a little event by the pool, and we discovered that Oasis restaurant by the pool is able to cater to all kinds of events from small-scale, private to huge ones.
It was then close to 3pm and we took the elevator up to the Executive Lounge located at the 15th floor, only accessible for in-house guests booked at the Executive levels or for business meetings. Separated by two storeys, we took our seat near the tall window for two facing the beautiful strait’s view for our quick business meeting. The upper level is much more suitable for bigger meeting involving more people.

Touring the hotel and its vast grounds got us a little tired and I was obviously looking forward to a goodnight’s rest. As a traveller be assured because safety is Thistle’s utmost concern. The card to your room is only accessible from the lobby and the floor where your room is located at. Just flash your card before pushing the button to go to your floor.
This time I stayed in the Deluxe Standard room with city view while my partner had the luck with Deluxe Straits View room. If you’re a business traveller consider checking into an Executive room at the Executive floors or those with large families may opt for the Junior Suite, Family Suite or the popular Thistle Suite for additional comfort and space. Each suite has private balconies too!
As a cherry on top of the icing, Thistle is offering school holiday packages for booking till December 2019 for 2 adults and 2 children below 12 years old in the Deluxe City Room at RM288nett per night. I’d say book away as that’s a steal deal for a staycation!
