Thistle is my family’s personal favourite, mostly for its location that is close by to what used to be our ancestor’s home. Needless to say, for some Johoreans, going to Thistle is a walk down the memory lane, and the food has never disappointed me.
This time of the year, the hotel’s buka puasa buffet is on an Arabian theme and the highlight is swapping the Roast Lamb for an exotic Arabian Fat-tail Sheep that was marinated overnight with a special Cajun recipe and slow-cooked for half a day before roasting it for the fast-breaking session.
It was an instant pick, or so I thought before turning to see a sight of fresh Durian brought to the hotel from kampung, calling out to me. Eating the first few pieces of freshly cracked open fruit of the day is a special kind of experience at Thistle!
Picking up some Lebanese Chicken Smoked Biryani Rice with the roast is probably the best combination I have ever had in all the buka puasa stints I’ve had so far! I cleared my plate to make room for more dishes such as fritters and salads that are so easy with refreshing fresh fruits to cleanse my palate in between.
Joshua Wong, the Marcom Manager of Thistle caught me while I was enjoying my food and elaborated that there would be a Turkish ice-cream stall, the one that would play tricks on you, but would only be available during the fasting month itself – that just made me anticipate the month to come faster!

The normal price is RM128 nett per adult, RM68 nett per child or senior citizen.
The menu would be on a daily rotational basis and would take place at their 500 pax Orchid Ballroom and Grand ballroom combined with the outdoor garden area from the 3rd April 2022 – 2nd May 2022 starting at 6.30 pm – 10.00 pm.
