Care United Johor Bahru (CUJB) revealed in a statement that the number of recipients of their Food Aid has decreased in June and July 2023, indicating that more impoverished households have become self-sufficient and do not need handouts to survive.

Initially established to combat food insecurity among children, the Food Aid programme has had a good impact on schools in the Johor Bahru region.

“Many of these students come from low-income families where money is tight. Their physical health suffers as a result of a lack of sufficient nourishment, as do their academic performance and overall growth,” said Care United.

CUJB collaborates with local schools, other NGOs, various religious bodies, and the private sector to raise donations and identify students in need.

“We carefully select food packages containing essential items like rice (1kg), sugar (1kg), sardines (3 tins), vermicelli noodles (1packet), flour (1kg), evaporated milk (3tins), instant noodles (1packet), tea leaf (5 grams), biscuits(1 packet), chocolate powder (1kg), cornflakes (1 box) to be prepared and distributed to these students regularly,” said Florence Goh, President of CUJB.

“For June and July 2023, Food Aid worth RM100 was distributed to 39 students with families from the B40 group in SJK (C) Kuo Kuang 1 on 27 June 2023. – 15 families in SJK(T) Ladang Sungai Papan on 4 July 2023,” she added.

“The programme has created a sense of community care and support within the schools. We continue to uplift communities through various initiatives, and one of our current initiatives is donating repurposed computers from kind donors to less fortunate students in schools and religious centres providing child enrichment classes.”

CUJB has also received a contribution of computers from Lanson Place Bukit Ceylon, Kuala Lumpur, a leading name in the hospitality industry, and the NGO distributed the repurposed units of 2 sets of computers to SJK(T) Ladang Sungai Papan on 4 July 2023, 2 sets of computers to SJK(T) Ladang Ulu Tiram on 20 July 2023,  1 set of computer to Sai Baba Centre, Ulu Tiram on 20 July 2023, 3 sets of computers to Sek. Keb. Sri Comel, Segamat, Johor on 26 July 2023 and 2 sets of computers to Exodus Home Segamat on 26 July 2023.
