The Housewife Social Security Scheme (SKSSR) would be implemented next year by the Human Resources Ministry (MoHR) through the Social Security Organisation (Socso), following a Cabinet meeting on the 14th of July, which resolved to provide social security protection to housewives.

“Currently, the draft of Housewives Social Security Bill is refined jointly by MoHR and the Attorney General’s Chambers before obtaining Cabinet approval for tabling in Parliament in the near future,” said its minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan.

“The SKSSR is open to all housewives, and it is predicted that it will safeguard 2.99 million individuals from household tragedies like accidents, illness, or death”, said the minister.

“The government will cover about 150,000 housewives from poor households with incomes below the poverty line, while other housewives will be able to participate on a voluntary basis,” he added in a statement.

He believes the SKSSR should be a social security agenda as productivity replacement to the housewives if they are involved in a domestic calamity or suffer from disabilities for which their contributions have economic value in the development of family institutions, or the Care Economy.

Given the importance of housewives’ activities and responsibilities in family institutions and national development, social security protection is required to guarantee their welfare and well-being.

“Not to mention, the COVID-19 pandemic has made their tasks and obligations more difficult, with new normative practices like working from home and implementing teaching and learning at home,” he added.
