Sports and co-curricular activities outside of the classroom would be permitted at the beginning of the academic session 2022/2023, according to Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin.

“These events must take place on school grounds,” he said during a press conference on Thursday, the 17th of March, after attending the Education Ministry’s excellent service awards ceremony.

In conjunction with this relaxation, Radzi stated that the Ministry would soon establish the standard operating method for preventing COVID-19.

“This is definitely good news for our children who have been confined to their classrooms until now. We want students and teachers to get used to the transition stage of living with COVID-19 before moving to the endemic phase,” he said.

Following the pandemic, the ministry suspended all sports and co-curricular activities, including school meetings, on the 10th of June, 2020.

When asked about the status of the primary school locker project, Radzi stated that the ministry was still working on the specifications for the lockers to guarantee they were of good quality and durable.

“The ministry will undertake the installation process once suitable locations have been identified but there are certain procedures to follow,” he added.

Earlier this month, Radzi said that lockers would be installed in primary schools in stages beginning this year to alleviate the problem of heavy school bags for pupils.

The project will be implemented in two phases, with phase one covering level one pupils in Years One, Two and Three which operate in two sessions and involve 10,662 classes and 323,186 pupils.

Phase two will involve level two students in Years Four, Five and Six operating in two sessions, with implementation expected in 2023.
