Port of Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysian-based MMC Group and Hague-based APM Terminals, has launched its Sustainability Framework & Targets: Together Towards A Sustainable Future to guide the company in delivering sustainable value by integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into its core business.
PTP also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM Environment) and Johor National Park Corporation (Perbadanan Taman Negara Johor) during the launch ceremony, as well as a pledge with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Perbadanan Taman Negara Johor (PTNJ) states that PTP will commit to replanting 160,000 mangrove trees at Tanjung Piai over a 5-year period to protect mangroves and biodiversity.
PTP is also collaborating with SWM Environment to establish a community-recycling centre with the goal of raising public awareness of environmental issues, such as reducing, reusing, and recycling materials that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills by using the KITARecycle platform.
PTP also signed a pledge to the United Nations Global Compact Principles to demonstrate its commitment to building a more sustainable future with its strategic partners.
Raven Kumar Krishnasamy, Johor State Chairman of Tourism, Environment, Heritage, and Culture, lauded PTP in his speech for taking a bold step forward in its green journey and transition to a more sustainable future.
“As Malaysia’s leading transhipment terminal and amongst the world’s busiest port, the state government of Johor is convinced that the launching of PTP Sustainability Framework will set the benchmark for the port management practices and business sustainability.”
“By being agile and adaptive to changes in the industry and global market, we also hope that PTP will continue to take proactive measures to enhance and coordinate its future sustainability efforts as well as to take a leap in extending its leadership role in sustainable port development in the state and country.” he added, while stating that Johor State government will continue to give all its support and commitment to PTP, to ensure it can achieve its aspiration to play a leading role in the port and logistics industry in shaping a responsible transition towards a sustainable future for Malaysia.
PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen said the Sustainability Framework enables PTP to systematically demonstrate value creation, guide appropriate decision making and strategic planning, implement better management programmes not only for PTP employees and tenant but to the surrounding communities as part of our symbiosis ecosystem, establish efficient stakeholder engagement and drive appropriate risk management and mitigation measures.
“This means that Sustainability is embedded into everything that we do – from how we manage our business, to how we operate as a terminal operator, to how we support and contribute to the societal development objectives of the country,” he said.
“Moving forward, we are also setting our eye on to establish Green Procurement Policy by 2025, to increase procurement percentage for products or services which has Green Certification for example MyHijau.” He added while stating that, PTP is fully committed to its sustainability journey despite not being a public listed company and soon will publish an inaugural sustainability report for FY2022.
PTP will embed ESG considerations into its decision making through the Sustainability Framework, and PTP will incorporate sustainability into its day-to-day operations through better management of its governance framework internally and throughout its supply chain, energy usage and waste management, material consumption patterns, and respect for human rights.
PTP also aspires to have a greater impact by making contributions to society and the community. This includes continuing its efforts through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to empower communities, protect the environment, and uplift communities.
