The opening of Pasir Gudang Hospital (HPG), which was supposed to operate on 1 August 2025, has been postponed to next year.

Johor Health and Environment Committee Chairman Ling Tian Soon confirmed this and said it was due to several technical issues including a shortage of health workers, especially doctors and nurses.

He said this decision was also agreed upon by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the state government to avoid any problems that would arise due to a shortage of staff.

“The shortage of health workers is one of the main issues we are currently facing. If this hospital operates without sufficient manpower, we are worried that there will be various issues and problems in the future.

“However, HPG will not be left idle but will instead become a support facility for Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) and Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI), which are the two busiest hospitals in the state,” he was reportedly said when contacted by the reporters.

He assured that his party would continue the discussions with the Ministry of Health to ensure that HPG can begin operations with sufficient staff.

Last June, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was reported to have said that HPG would begin its first phase of operations on 1st August, involving about 30% of the hospital’s entire operations.

He added that for the initial phase, it would involve 30% of essential service areas such as Accident and Emergency (A&E), Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Paediatric Department.

“So far, 274 positions have been filled and we expect this hospital to be fully operational involving 1,845 staff in July 2026,” he said.
