The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) is once again coordinating the implementation of the Cloud Seeding Operation (OPA) which focuses on the southern region of the peninsula.
A total of four (4) series of operations will be implemented starting 20th April until 23rd April 2026.
The implementation of cloud seeding in the states of Melaka and Johor this time is in line with the recommendation of Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP), for an additional series of operations to be arranged following the previous implementation on 11th and 12th February and 9th April 2026.
The hot and dry weather in several areas in Melaka and Johor has affected the daily lives of residents, especially in terms of the continuity of water supply services, agriculture, smallholders and security.
Datuk Haji Hameed bin Mytheen Kunju Basheer, Exco for Infrastructure, Public Facilities and Transport of the State of Melaka also participated and witnessed the implementation of the OPA on its first day.
This OPA focuses on eight (8) dams and two (2) Water Treatment Plants (LRA) in the states of Melaka and Johor to ensure the continuity of water supply to the population.
The main focus in Melaka includes the Durian Tunggal Dam, Jus Dam and Asahan Dam; while in Johor it involves the Upper Layang Dam, Machap Dam, Seluyut Dam, Lebam Dam, Linggiu Dam, Lokheng Water Treatment Plant and Gembut Water Treatment Plant.
The continuity of this operation is very necessary since the water storage level in the dam area is still at the alert level.
NADMA in its statement said it has obtained technical advice from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) regarding the suitability of atmospheric characteristics before the implementation of the OPA.
Assessment of the suitability of atmospheric conditions is very important to ensure the effectiveness of the activity of spraying salt solution (sodium chloride) into the clouds, especially in stimulating the formation of rain clouds.
C130 Hercules aircraft belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RUAF) will be used throughout the operation.
“This cloud seeding intervention is urgently needed as one of the proactive measures to prevent the water supply crisis from reaching a critical level by early May 2026.”
“This will also ensure that the stability of water supply for the people of Melaka and Johor remains guaranteed.”
