Award winning Edible Park in Medini City offers green space for future generations

Medini Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MIM) urban park development won another distinguished award for its Edible Park, from the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM). Dr James Tee, Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer of MIM received the Excellence Award for the year 2018 under the CSR Category – Green Initiatives Awards at a gala dinner held in Petaling Jaya last Saturday. The Malaysian Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) 11 organised by ILAM is held in conjunction with The World Landscape Architecture Month 2019 celebration, endorsed by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).

“MIM is honoured to receive yet another prestigious award from such an esteemed organisation as ILAM. This accolade is a true testament of our success in building the Edible Park to embrace sustainable values in order to preserve precious green space for our future generations. This is our way of giving back to society. For instance, our Edible Park has been consistently promoting social inclusivity by hosting free weekly sustainability and nature-related workshops. Moreover, we also host a monthly green market where organically grown vegetables are sold and where home-based entrepreneurs sell their artisanal items,” said Dr James Tee.

The 5-acre Edible Park is one of MIM’s 46 urban park developments in Medini City, the Central Business District of Iskandar Puteri. The 46 urban parks total up to a land area of 342 acres where each park is carefully designed and themed, adding vibrancy to the entire Medini City development spanning over an area of 2,200 acres. The Edible Park is an edible landscape designed to build community around conscious and sustainable living. The Edible Park is equipped with a workshop studio, café, designed gardens and organic urban farm, all meticulously planned to allow residents, workers and visitors alike to experience Medini as a city built within a park.

Edible Park has been pulling visitors to adopt sustainable living practices since its launch in March 2018. Since then, the five-acre park has hosted two major green-living related festivals, numerous weekly workshops on food and its relationship to sustainable living. These knowledge exchange sessions are held to educate the community on sustainable living where interesting and valuable topics such soil science, seed paper, turnip dumplings, kefir-making, tea-tasting and even an acting class based on Shakespeare’s works. The Edible Park also hosts a green market held on every first Saturday of the month selling fresh green and organic produce, plant-based food and products.

Edible Park is a collaboration between Medini Iskandar Berhad and social enterprise JOGREEN. Chris Parry, founder of JOGREEN conceptualised and designed Edible Park as a platform to build a community around ideas of food and sustainability. The JOGREEN team maintains the park grounds and manages all activities at the park which include weekly workshops, monthly markets and annual festivals.
