Kukup International Ferry Terminal has reopened to the public after two years of hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Johor Works, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said 107 passengers arrived at the ferry terminal here at about 11.30 pm on the 19th of May 2022.

“We finally received the first batch of passengers from Tanjung Balai Karimun, Indonesia, after two years.

“Only one slot was opened on the first day of the ferry terminal reopening and on the second day, we will have two,” he reportedly said after welcoming the passengers at the ferry terminal on the 19th of May 2022.

He said that more slots would be added gradually, based on demand from Malaysian and Indonesian passengers.

“We expect to see between 300 and 400 passengers using the ferry terminal here in the first week.

“We will eventually open up five slots – the number available prior to the pandemic,” said Mohamad Fazli, adding that each slot could accommodate 168 passengers.

Bernama has reported that Mohammad Fazli also said almost all Johor sea entrances have been opened, and the Puteri Harbour International Ferry Terminal is expected to begin operations in the same week as the opening of the Kukup’s Terminal, apart from the Muar and Batu Pahat ferry terminals and even the new ferry terminal in Desaru will start operating soon.

Transportation Attache of the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur, Captain Supendi, was reportedly present during the opening as well.
