The national-level World Occupational Therapy Day 2026 celebration was held at Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru, gathered more than 450 occupational therapists from all over Malaysia representing the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM), the Ministry of Health Malaysia Training Institute (ILKKM), higher learning institutions and the private sector.

This year’s celebration featured the theme, “Participation Matters”, which emphasised the importance of active and meaningful individual involvement in the activities of daily life.

In a press statement by the Occupational Therapy of Ministry of Health Malaysia, it is said that in the context of occupational therapy, participation is not simply the ability to perform an activity but encompasses an individual’s opportunity to play a role, make choices, interact with the community and live a meaningful life according to their abilities and aspirations.

This theme also reflects the occupational therapy profession’s commitment to empowering individual participation regardless of age, level of functioning or health condition.

Various activities were organised to promote wellbeing, social interaction, teamwork and active involvement in meaningful activities. Among the highlights of the celebration were a futsal competition, a bowling competition and a “Leisure in Motion, Heart in Action” Workshop.

These activities not only served as a platform to strengthen professional relationships but also highlighted the concepts of work-life balance, leisure activities, physical health, emotional wellbeing and social participation, which are important elements in the practice of occupational therapy.

This celebration is organised by the Occupational Therapy Service Technical Committee, in collaboration with the Johor State Occupational Therapy Service, the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Occupational Therapy Association of Malaysia (OT-Malaysia).

The organisation of the 2026 World Occupational Therapy Day Celebration is expected to increase public and healthcare professionals’ awareness of the role of occupational therapists in helping individuals achieve optimal levels of functionality, independence and participation in daily life. It is also an important platform in strengthening professional networks and collaboration between professionals from the public, academic and private sectors throughout the country.

“Participation Matters” carries the message that every individual has the right to be involved, contribute and participate meaningfully in life, family, work and community,” it said by the end of the statement.
