It has been a while since I stepped out to feast at a buffet in the new normal world, and I was excited about two things – to dine in at one of our local hotels again and to see what has changed in the usual buffet being served.
Thistle Johor Bahru’s invitation for its Christmas & New Year Festive Food came right in time for me to test the water of the new normal, post-vaccination with the economy opening slowly but surely.
As I walked down the beautiful and elegant Glass Restaurant, I could see familiar faces again and it already feels like a family reunion for the holiday season. It was much lesser in capacity as a common safety measure however, the food is enough to make my eyes feel jolly already. As a big fan of appetisers, the array of choices from Seafood on Ice to local Rojak Buah and Kerabu are my first go-to section.
The star of the buffet had to be the Chef’s Special BBQ Carving, the lovely BBQ Beef Brisket and Roasted Whole Cajun Chicken in the middle of the cuisines is easily the most picked up ones. Increasing more lovely protein intake, I topped it off with some Stuffed Chicken Breast with Spinach and Feta Cheese paired with Creamy Potato Gratin. I do recommend their aromatic butter rice too if you have more room for the main course!
Your choice is ample at Thistle, so do walk to the outside and get the seafood of your choice barbecued perfectly from a choice of Seabass Fish in foil, Garlic Prawn Skewer, Banana Leaf Mackerel and many more. If seafood is not your thing, there are always Satays and Sausages to your delight.
What is Christmas and New Year without its dessert? You will be spoiled for choice and if you have trouble choosing, I would like you to pick up a slice of their Chocolate Breton Sable with Coffee Ganache which I personally love to start with. Then move to some Gingerbread and Yule Log, for that festive feeling but of course, there are also the Panna Cotta and assorted pastries to choose from.
Satiated beyond my expectation, with the need for guests to be fully vaccinated if they would like to enter Thistle Hotel and the controlled amount of people at once, I think it is safe to say that as long as we wear our masks, sanitise or wash our hands frequently and keep a good distance with each other, we can dine-in fine.
Thistle Johor Bahru Christmas & New Year Festive Buffets consists of lunch from 12 pm to 3.30 pm and dinner from 6.30 pm to 10 pm on the 24th of December and the 25th of December and 31st of December and the 1st of January 2021, respectively.

Price range for lunch is RM88 per adult and RM48 per child while dinner is priced at RM128 per adult and RM68 per child applicable for both Christmas and New Year’s buffets. All prices are nett.
